OSF (Oxford Scientific Films) is a small company with a BIG reputation. Founded in 1968 it is the oldest independent production company in the UK and also one of the most respected, having delivered hit after hit to the International market. The company is particularly well-known for its high production values and its innovation in both photography AND storytelling. We were credited with “changing the landscape of natural history filmmaking” with our four-season global phenomenon Meerkat Manor which achieved an unprecedented 950% above slot average on its first outing for Animal Planet.
“As an experiment in turning documentary into a narrative with animals as named characters, Meerkat Manor has become a worldwide phenomenon.” Los Angeles Times
“Before Meerkat Manor became such an active vehicle for public emoting, it was merely the most entertaining nature show on television.” New York Times
For BBC/ PBS Nature we made one of the most popular ever editions of the blue-chip Natural World strand with Honey Badgers: Masters of Mayhem and we delivered 26 one-hour episodes of the psychologically disturbing ratings-winner Fatal Attractions for Animal Planet.
More recently we gained unprecedented access to film the wildlife of South Korea and the DMZ producing the two-part Wild Korea (Terra Mater Factual Studios, CJ E&M and BBC) followed by the stunning Magical Land of Oz – the first blue chip natural history of Australia series for over 10 years, co-produced with Northern Pictures for the BBC, ABC and PBS.
In addition to natural history, we produce documentaries including hits such as A Very British Hotel (C4), A Very British Country House (C4) and Driven: The Billy Monger Story (BBC).
Not just a TV company we understand how to finance and produce theatrical too. Meerkat Manor provided a springboard into that market with a film for Animal Planet and The Weinstein Company. We moved on to embrace the recent popularity of 3D and made three theatrical films for the IMAX/ Special Venue market, firstly with Meerkats 3D and then with Pandas 3D:The Journey Home (Sky/ National Geographic Cinema Ventures) which is playing on the North American circuit.
We have a string of BAFTAs, EMMYs and RTS Awards and countless others from Banff, New York (many Gold Awards and a couple of Grand Awards – best in festival), Jackson Hole, and Wildscreen.
